Overview
South of Delta Junction, AK there are many glaciers. One of them lies at mile 218 and a hike up Castner Creek brings you to its end (the terminal moraine). Once you climb up onto the glacier you are standing on thousands of years of snow and sediment trapped there. Castner glacier is rapidly receding and as it melts has created many stunning and several exceptional ice caves. The caves often reach far back and are sculpted in inconceivable ways. As you stand there in the chill of the cave and stare into the crystal-clear ice, it is impossible to grasp it all!
**Due to the extraordinary melt on the glacier during summer 2022, the ice cave has experienced considerable collapse and looks drastically different than it is pictured on this page. Anyone visiting the glacier should exercise caution when approaching its terminus.

What To Expect
Heading southeast out of Fairbanks on the Richardson Highway for the 2.5 hours drive. Driving past the nearby North Pole, “Where the Spirit of Christmas Lives Year Round,” giving a wink and a nod to the world’s largest Santa statue. Passing through lake country… Chena, Harding, Birch, Lost, and Quartz—all worthy of ice fishing expeditions, snowshoeing quests, or photo treks. Delta Junction, about 90 miles out, brought the first glimpse of civilization back into focus. Here, the famous Alaska-Canada Highway hooks up with the Richardson. In Delta, you can use the restroom and visit a quirky and well-stocked grocery, and grab a bite to eat.
Another half-hour drive will get us to the Castner Glacier Ice Cave parking lot. An easy hike or snowshoe leads to a huge ice cave at the glacier terminus. The 2.6-mile round-trip hike to the Glacier is straightforward and almost entirely flat.
After a fantastic winter hike, we will have a restroom stop at Delta Junction again on our way back.
